Did you know that Sylvania is by Ledvance? Continue reading to discover the differences between the two!

From its humble beginnings to the titan of a company it has become now, Sylvania has gone through a multitude of changes and optimizations. Though many people are familiar with Sylvania, the general populace is less acquainted with its newer line, Ledvance. If you were under the assumption that the two were not related, then hopefully this blog will clear up any confusion and questions you have!

There is plenty to say about Sylvania’s history along with its current position in the global market. Let’s go over both of those topics and more in this blog!

The History of Sylvania

The origins of Sylvania can be traced back to two places, or rather, two companies. In 1901 Frank Poor partnered with and later fully owned a company known as the Bay State Lamp Company and in 1906, the Novelty Incandescent Lamp Company, a name that would later be changed to NILCO, was formed.

It wasn’t until 1931 that the two companies merged and came together to make Hygrade Sylvania Corporation, a company selling different products under the respective names of Hygrade and Sylvania. This company continued to sell and grow until once again they changed their name in 1942 to Sylvania Electric Products.

In 1959, another merging occurred when Sylvania Electric Products joined together with General Telephone to form a company that would eventually be known as GTE.

The Osram Sylvania we know and love today wasn’t created until 1993, when Osram, a company based in Germany, received Sylvania’s North American lighting division from GTE.

From its early days of researching fluorescents and helping with war efforts, Sylvania has made leaps and bounds of progress. Today, Sylvania has locations in more than fifty different countries and boasts over a hundred years of business experience. These many accomplishments show the massive transformation that occurred from where it once started.

How did Ledvance come to be?

Let’s start by asking another question. Why was Ledvance created? Well, the answer is simple. Osram, the owners of Sylvania’s North American lighting division, wanted to create a personalized and more customer-friendly organization. To them, the best way to do that was through Ledvance.

When coming up with a name for the company, they wanted to find something that sounded professional, but also held a deeper meaning. In 2015 Ledvance was announced and in 2016 it was brought to life.

Due to the company’s work with LEDs and its drive to innovate the lighting world, two words stood out as perfect options for the company’s name. LEDs and advance, these two words merged to create Ledvance, a name that properly reflects the company's dedication to advancement and reliability.

How do Sylvania and Ledvance function?

With the respective history of both explained, you might be asking yourself, what’s the difference? What truly sets them apart? Let’s dive into that and go over the ways that these two are distinct from one another.

Who owns what?

Let’s clear some things up. First off, Sylvania has not become Ledvance, rather, the portion of Osram that is dedicated to selling general lighting, also known as Sylvania, has been given to Ledvance. Since its inception in 2016, Ledvance has existed as an independent company separate from Osram.

A year after its release, Ledvance was sold to a Chinese consortium in 2017 and is now owned by a company called MLS Co. Although Ledvance is owned by MLS Co, it still has exclusive access to sell Sylvania general lighting products from Osram.

Although Sylvania continues to use its name for merchandising, it was indeed purchased and is now owned by Ledvance.

What do they sell?

Ledvance focuses on selling a range of light products: lamps, LED luminaires, LED Strips, EV chargers, and LED tubes are some of the many products they sell.

They also offer smart lighting products that can be easily controlled through the many available SMART+ apps on your phone.

Through Ledvance, many products are still sold using the Sylvania name. Lightbulbs.com hosts an array of such products.
