History of Upside Down Christmas Trees

Although upside down Christmas trees might seem like a relatively new concept, their origin may date as far back as the 8th century. Myths state that a Benedictine monk named Boniface discovered the fir tree when he cut down another tree and the fir grew in its place. He began using the triangular-shaped tree to represent the Trinity and would sometimes turn it upside down.

Whether the story is myth or reality, hanging trees right side up was a trend in the 19th century - in smaller houses, there wasn’t enough space to have a tree on the floor.

After disappearing for a while, upside down trees are regaining popularity as businesses are seeing the value in not only hanging Christmas trees from the ceiling but also hanging them upside down. It frees up floor space for customers and retailers and places ornaments at eye level so they can be enjoyed by all. Now upside down Christmas trees are making their way into homes and becoming a wonderful addition to the holiday season.

Benefits of Upside Down Christmas Trees

Upside down Christmas trees create a fun and bizarre look, but they are also space-savers. And you can keep more of your ornaments out of reach of small children and curious pets!

Despite their look, upside down Christmas trees are just as easy to assemble as most artificial traditional Christmas trees. And if you’re trying to create a unique space this holiday season, an upside down tree is sure to stand out.

Types of Upside Down Trees

Pre-Lit

Pre-lit upside down trees are easy to set up since the hardest part of decorating is already done! The trees come with LED, mini, or incandescent light strings wrapped around so the only step left is to plug them in. With different colored lights to choose from such as clear, multi-colored, and warm white, you can be sure to find the tree that best matches your holiday décor.

Unlit

If preferred, there are a few unlit upside down tree options that would be a lovely addition to any home. These are easy to custom decorate in any style needed and can have the light string of your choosing. To help with tree decorating, we offer LED, miniature, incandescent, icicle and many more light strings.

Colored

Besides traditional evergreen trees, there are several colored options that can match any color scheme in your holiday décor. Silver and white upside down trees can add an elegant flair while lime and champagne add a fun pop of color. We also offer flocked trees that bring the outdoors inside!

How to Set Up Your Tree

We carry two types of upside down trees. One sits on the floor with the stand coming from what is typically the top of the tree. The other tree type actually hangs from the ceiling. Setting up the tree itself is the same as most other artificial Christmas trees. If you choose a ceiling-mounted tree, simply set up the tree before hanging it from the ceiling.

How to Decorate

An upside down Christmas tree can be adorned with much of the same decor we know and love on traditional trees. Ornaments and string lights work just as well as on traditional trees. Tree toppers work on upside down trees that hang from the ceiling. Be sure if you use a tree topper there is enough space between the tip of the tree and the floor for your tree topper!
