What Is a R30 Light Bulb?

R30 bulbs are a style of flood light bulb with a reflective coating on the inside of the bulb. Similar to other R-style bulbs, most R30 bulbs are frosted to create a softer light and reduce glare. The designation of 30 is used to indicate diameter in 1/8 of an inch. Though they may vary slightly in size, most R30 bulbs have a diameter of approximately 3.75 inches.

Benefits of Using R30 LED Light Bulbs

  • Last 10-25 times longer than traditional technology such as halogen and incandescent
  • Energy-saving (LEDs use 12-15% of the energy incandescents use)
  • Dynamic color temperature options (warm white --> bright white)
  • Very affordable
  • They don’t give off as much heat, benefitting spaces that are being actively cooled
  • Do not contain mercury (like compact fluorescents)
  • Turn on instantly, especially in cold temperatures

Where to Use R30 Light Bulbs

R30 light bulbs have similar uses to other flood light bulbs. Common applications for R30 bulbs include flood lighting, track lighting, and in recessed can fixtures. There are dimmable options as well that create a sense of ambiance if needed in the application.

Is R30 the Same as BR30 and PAR30?

While R30 sounds similar to BR30, PAR30 and PAR30LN, they are very different in design and application.

The biggest difference between PAR, BR, and R flood light bulbs is the reflector which is the part of the bulb that reflects and distributes the light emitted. Because of this, the types technically can be used interchangeably but the light distribution would have a different effect that might not be wanted in it’s application.

  • PAR stands for parabolic aluminized reflector which means the aluminized reflector is shaped into a parabola and this design makes them perfect for spot lighting.
  • BR stands for bulged reflector and they have a wider beam angle that can commonly be found in recessed fixtures.
  • R stands for the reflector coating that extends the direction the light is emitted making it much brighter. This feature makes them ideal for use in track lighting.
