Whether you work from home full-time or just want a space to brainstorm ideas on the weekend, your home office is an important part of the home. And as you know by now, lighting can truly make or break a room—and in this case, your productivity. Read on for office lighting ideas that will illuminate your workday!
If possible, start out by setting up your office near a window. As humans, we’re drawn to natural light, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll find that there’s nothing like staring out a sunny window while brainstorming your next masterpiece. Some people do find the outdoors distracting, however, so if you’re one of those people, situate your desk a bit off to the side for maximum efficiency.
If you're not able to position your desk by a window but still want the benefits of natural daylight, install daylight bulbs in your light fixtures. These mimic the bright blue-toned light of midday and provide the same benefits as natural daylight, such as improved attention span and alertness.
Layering light is a great strategy for any room, and the office is no exception. When we say layering light, we mean having various types of light that can be used together or separately to create your ideal custom lighting setup that will carry you from day to night. An example of this would be an overhead fixture for general lighting, such as a ceiling fan light or ceiling fixture, an accent light, such as a sconce or pendant fixture, and a source of task lighting, like an angled desk light. The latter is especially important for a home office, as you’ll want to be able to focus your light directly on what you’re working on, especially at night. When you layer light, you have multiple options available to fit your mood, your task, or the time of day.
It’s also a good idea to include some ambient lighting in your home office setup. Ambient lighting provides a soft, soothing glow that is great for stress relief. You could install LED strips or rope lights along the top of your work area, string lights around your bulletin board (Bulbrite Starry Lights pictured here), or install an LED puck light behind your monitor.
No matter what kind of work you do, or how long you spend at your desk every day, having the correct lighting for your home office can make all the difference. So get your lights up and get to work!
