What Is a R20 Light Bulb?

R20 bulbs are a style of flood light bulb with a reflective coating on the inside of the bulb. As with other flood lights, the 20 indicates the bulb’s diameter in 1/8 of an inch. This means any R20 bulb’s diameter is approximately 2.5 inches.

Benefits of Using R20 LED Light Bulbs

  • Last 10-25 times longer than traditional technology such as halogen and incandescent
  • Energy-saving (LEDs use 12-15% of the energy incandescents use)
  • Dynamic color temperature options (warm white --> bright white)
  • Very affordable
  • They don’t give off as much heat, benefitting spaces that are being actively cooled
  • Do not contain mercury (like compact fluorescents)
  • Turn on instantly, especially in cold temperatures

Where to Use R20 Light Bulbs

R20 bulbs have similar uses to other flood light bulbs. Common applications for R20 bulbs include flood lighting, track lighting, and in recessed can fixtures.

Since the R20 bulb is smaller than many other styles of flood lighting, they are ideal for the same applications but in smaller fixtures.

Is R20 the Same as BR20 and PAR20? What Are the Differences?

While R20 sounds similar to BR20 and PAR20, they are very different in design and application.

The biggest difference between PAR, BR, and R flood light bulbs is the reflector, which is the part of the bulb that reflects and distributes the light emitted.

  • PAR stands for parabolic aluminized reflector which means the aluminized reflector is shaped into a parabola and this design makes them perfect for spot lighting.
  • BR stands for bulged reflector and they have a wider beam angle that can commonly be found in recessed fixtures.
  • R stands for the reflector coating that extends the direction the light is emitted making it much brighter. This feature makes them ideal for use in track lighting.
