Based in Waitsfield, Vermont, Verilux was founded in 1956 by a graphic artist searching for relief from his chronic eye inflammation. The artist, Howard Scott, often painted and drew at night under extremely poor light, and found that his eyes were becoming irritated by the constant straining. Based on his experiences, Scott developed a light fixture which replicated the bright light of high noon.
